The first will be in port from 22nd to 26th July, and the Japanese traiing ships from 25s to 28s July. Certain of the officers of the Japanese ships are connections of the Empero of Japan. The Harbor Board will extend all the customary coutrtesjies and facilities to the ships.

Galvanised Iron Corrosion. The suggestion that the shipping companies and other: interests concerned should combine to ascertain by research the cause of corrosion of galvanised iron 'goods when In transit, was made b> a witness in. the Supreme Court at Auckland (states the New Zealand Herald). ages were claimed for deterioration, of galvanised wire. “Until the interests concerned in matters of this kind get together,” he said, “and get a thorough investigation into the causes of this frequently mysterious corrosion of iron goods on ships, losses of this kind will continually occur. These bodise should take the matter in hand and have research done, otherwise they will constantly be in the position of calling exr perts to give evidence without sufficient data.” - ,

Satingi Systems. Three years ago a poll was taken in Wanganui on the rating system,, and this resulted in a decision in

favour of rating on the unimproved value by 547 votes. The system did not prove acceptable to a large number of the citizens, and as a result, of representations it was decided to take another poll. Mr H. Atmore, M.P., for Nelson, was invited to take part in the campaign, anci he addressed four meetings on the virtues of rating on the annual value. The poll was taken on Friday, and Mr Atmore received telegraphic advice to the effect that the system of rating- on the annual value had been adopted by nearly 500 votes. Mr Atmore has received numerous telegrams of congratulation on the' success which attended his efforts, and requests have already been made that he should speak in Auckland, where it is understood, a proposal that rating on the unimproved-value will shortly be considered.

New Addington Shops, i It is only a matter of a couple ofi months now until the whole of the railway shops at present under construction at Addington will be completed (says the Lyttelton Times). The finishing touches are being put on the wheels and bogies shop, and the woodmill, the wood -wagon, and the reclaim shop are on the verge of completion. A portion of the new steel wagon shop has been built, but until the present machine shop is demolished, and all, the machinery shifted, a job that is expected to take about eight months, the main portion of this shop cannot be built. ago a new tarpaulin shop was built, the old shop being used & s a store. The old shop is to be demolished, but this cannot be done until the present foundry is shifted to Hillside. Nothing definite hah been decided yet regarding the removal of the staff from Christchurch to Hillside, and vice versa. Th,® matter depends on the date of the completion of the Hillside shops, and these are a good way behind Addington in the matter of progress.
