Great indignation has been created throughout the Bay of Plenty by the decision of the Government to immediately commence the construction of the Rotorua-Taupo railway, it being (considered that 'bin* present building of this line is uncalled fo v , and a waste of public monev.

On behalf of the Opotiki County Council, the chairman, Mr ,T. H. Reid, dispatched the following telegram to Mr Ooates:—

"County electors view with general dissatisfaction and disappointment the Government's decision to proceed with the railway from Rotorua to Taupo, while the main East 1 Coast railway between Taneatua and Opotiki remains uncompleted. In view of the assured revenue from the fertile- settled hind between Tanee'tua and Opotiki, electors, cannot understand the reason , for the Government's delay', and urges that immediate provision be made for this extension." It is understood that similar messages have been, forwarded to the Prime Minister from the • Opotiki Chamber of Commerc. the Fanners' Union } the Borough Council, Whakatane County Council, and tub.
