A SUCCESSFUL YEAR

AVON BOWLING CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Avon Bowling Club was held last night, when Mr J. Masters presided over a good attendance. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report made reference to the fact that on account oPthe operations of “summer time” an extra hour’s' bowling wa s enjoyed ny many who could not otherwise have played in the evenings. The green was in gocd order throughout the* year, thanks to the attention paid to it by the green wardens. Continuing the report stated:

Your Club met with a fair measure of success in ■ tlie ShieTd competition. Many matches known as “friendly” were played against neighbouring clubs both by Thursday and Saturday players, who probably enjoyed themselves a good deal more than those 1 engaged in the more stern contests for the Shield. The Singles Championship last season was won by Mr Arthur Dickinson, one of the younger members of the Club. Mr Dickinson also performed well at the meeting of the Divisional Champions. Mr Clen. Hill was the winner of the Junior Championship. 'lb both these members we offer our sincere congratulations.

The Handicap Fairs Competition was not completed. It is a matter for regret that in all competitions very few contestants made much, effort to complete their engagements When a Joss or two> had been suffered interest seemed to wane, the result being, as stated, that the Competitions dragged, and so finality was reached- " ITTo would strongly recoin, mend the incoming; committee to Biliously consider the matter of devising some means to prevent a recurrence of this sort of thing, should the competitions be continued. There is no doubt in our minds that the playing ot such competitive games tends to improve the all-round standard of play, which is naturally of a somewhat more keen nature, besides which, in the case of both singles and doubles (especially singles), the drawing practice is invaluable.. The thanks of the Club are' due to the Auditor, Selector, Green Wardens, and all those members who) at various times and in various ways assisted the dub; also to Mr T. Harry Penn, the use of whose office has been cheerfully offered and thankfully availed of during the whole of the Club’s career. Mr E.‘ Newland who - continues With, us as caretaker, carried out his duties faithfully and well. W r e also wish to thank the ladieg for assistance in various directions, but especially in connection with. afternodn tea arrangements. Their work in this direction being beyond praise.

Tn conclusion we hope the' comma year will he as successful as the past have proved to he. The President in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet expressed gratifi cation at the excellent nttetl3ance more especially considing the weather. Isuch an excellent attendance showed that the members were taking an active interest in the affairs of the Club. Thera was a small debit balance on the working of the Club hut it soon could be wiped off. The report and balance-sheet were adopted w&Hout discussion.
