STRATFORD (14) v. TARIKI (7)

Stratford and Tariki, in their match on Victoria Park yesterday, provided plenty of excitement for the spectators who were well worked up in the concluding stages, when Tariki seemed likely to ring on some points. The score about represents the merits of the teams. The home team included several men who have not played often this season, and cohesion was lacking, though it could not bo said that the newcomers did not play well. The visitors put up a good fight, the forwards; being consistently on the ball. With a little more combination in the backs they would bo a hard team to beat. As it was their scoring opportunities were made time and again by runs by Mcßoberts and hicks by Herdmau, but the combination to take full advantage of the openings made, was lacking. The teams were as follows: —

Stratford; F., Collins, Phillips, Hebron, Wheeler, P. Collins, J- Henry, 11. Collins, Nolan, Sharrock, Fookes, Kciglitley, Hinton, lludings, Neal, D. Collins.

Tarilki: L. Hollis, Trass, Aubrey, C. Hollis, Herdman, Mcßoberts, Clough, Hill, Hacker, Wright, Butler Pettitt, Lawrence, Goodwin, Welch.

FIRST SPELL. Soon after the start the visitors set up a strong attack which took play right down to the Stratford line, but a counter-attack culminated ini Sharrock kicking a goal from a* penalty in a handy position. Stratford 3, Tariki 0Good openings by Mcßoberts and then Trass piit Tariki on the attack. Robson picked up nicely and Henry and Phillips carried on, but the latter was forced out. Play hung in mid-field for a time, till two successive runs by Mcßoberts saw the Stratford line in danger. The home team relieved, and just afterwards the Tariki full-back forced just ahead of Wheeler. Trjriki chirred their line, where there was some tight play and a good kick by Herdman took play over half way- The reds came again, and from a scrum near the Tariki line Henry and P. Collins handled. The latter passed to Robson who dropped oved near the post. Situ - rock converted. Stratford S, Tariki 0. Most of the home backs handled in a passing rush, but the defence was equal to the) occasion and the attack broke down. Near half-why Fookes gave Nolan a good pass and the latter sent out to Robson, who got in a good kick. This kick was badly fielded and things looked dangerous for tho visitors, but they relieved. An attack on their other wing failed and then from loose play near the lino P Collins scored through last following up. Tho kick flailed. Stratford H, Tariki 0. The spell closed with the score unaltered, tho ball going out just over half way after a good run by McRoberts, who was supported by Herdman. Towards the end of tho spell play wa s chiefly confined to Tariki’s territory. SECOND SPELL. The visitors attacked strongly on resuming, but got into trouble by poor fielding by C- Hollis. Tho red backs handled and P. Collins narrowlv missed scoring, being pushed out uepr the corner. From the line-out Collins secured and was unlucky to miss with a pot. Tight play followed, and from a penalty Sharrock landed a good goal. Stratford 11, Tariki 0.

After a fair spell of defensive work the visitors were put on the attack by a nice run by Mcßoberts. The pressure was continued, by a good, ■kick by Herdhtfui, the forwards dribbling right up to the lino. Just afterwards F- Collins got into trouble, hut was unable to kick out. Well in Stratford territory the visitors had two unsuccessful shots at the goal. There was nq let-up, and a persistent Tariki attpek took play dangerously near to the home goal, but the defence was equally persistent and play was shifted to outside the 2d, and a little later into the visitors’ 2d, but keen following up saw play jh tlio homo 2d again- Hero attacks wore shot in cm each wing in quick succession. The homo hacks transferred the scene of play, hut poor fielding by Phillips spoiled the movement. Pipy was hold up for a time owing to injury to L. Hollis, who had to retire. Play was taken to the home. 25 and then back to the visitor’s 25, where tight play followed. Henry made an opening and passed ; t 0 Nolan wh Q made a great run, and ,

was pushed out just near the corner. Tlie visitors came agjiin strongly, however, and from scrambling play near the home 25 secured and potted a nice goal. Stratford 14, Tariki 4. Play continued vigorously in Stratford’s quarters, and Aubrey landed a goal from a penalty in n handy position. Stratford 14, Tariki 7. Tariki were still on the attack when time was sounded shortly afterwards with the score unalteredMr. I - Julian refereed. CELTIC v. MIDHIRST. Midhirst made a splendid showing against Celtic, their forwards having command of the game throughout, while in the closing stages they threatened to overwhelm the lighter Celtic packThe second spell was well advanced when Dodd made the first score of the game by kicking fa fine goal from a. penalty at an acute angle. T. Boniface nearly scored for Midhirst. He carried on from a vigorous forward rush, and crossed the line with nobody to beat, but he lost the hall.

Celtic’s second score was made by C. Sangster, who marked in front ol the posts and had no difficulty in getting the tall over.

Jackson almost scored for Midhirst, and just before time Dodd had to force in face of a determined effort on' the part of Midhirst.
