to 'nut editor I . Sir, —I noticed in your issue of Hast night a paragraph to the effect that Mr J. McCluggage had written to the Hon. A. D. McLeod expressing appreciation of the Minister’s consideration for the hack country settlers. This is a grateful tribute, and no doubt Mr McLeod appreciated it, but does Mr McCluggage forget tlil.it it was through the efforts °£ the late member for this district, Mr 11. Masters, that any concrete action was taken in connection with tho problem of the hack country. It was Mr Masters who brought the difficulties of the settlers on the deteriorated lands out East, before the House. Ho brought tho matter up in a non party spirit, and it was as a result of this that the Government sot up the Commission which investigated the question. Our late member had an intimate knowledge of hack block conditions as he was frequently in the, district, and because of this he was i'blc to buing the hardships under which tho settlors were suffering before the country in a forcible way.
