FOOTBALL

NEW ZEALAND UNION.

ANNUAL MEETING,

Press Association —Copyright. WELLIGTON, Last, Night,

At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union the president, Mr Manoy, of Motueka, said the last year had "been on© Of continued progress. Its outstanding feature' was the selection of the All Blacks for South Africa after most exhaustive senior trials. The progress' of the team would be watched with great interest, but whether New Zealand won or lost, all trusted that the games would be played in a friendly spirit and would have a great effect from an Imperial standpoint.

The Dominion's request for an Imperial Rugby Board was supported by the English Rugby Union, but was turned down by the International Board. It was to be hoped that the board would be made to realise the importance of the proposition and would give the Dominions a voice in the government of the game. The board had refused an invitation for a British team to tour New South Wales and New Zealand in 1930, but the English Rugby Union had happily stepped into the breach, and other Home unions would not stop their players joining the team.

It was very gratifying to know that Rugby in New South Wales was making a recovery and the success achieved by the Waratahs would do touch to spread the game to other States, Mr Manoy continued. Although the Maori tour of New Zealand last year had not been a success, it was appreciated very much by the minor unions. The finances of the union were in a healthy condition, assets over liabilities being £17,786 6s lid. In conclusion, Mr Manoy impressed upon the major unions the importance of giving more assistance to minor unions by playing more matches with them.

The following tentative itinerary has been drawn up for the New South Wales team in New Zealand this season:—

Leave Sydney, August 17; arrive New Zealand, August 21; Auckland, August 25; Wanganui, August 29; Bay, September 1; Wellington (first test), September 5; Otago September 8; Southland, September 12; Christchurch (second test), September 15; Marlborough, September 19; leave for Sydney, September 21.

The North Island v. South Island match will be played at 'Christchurch on August 18.

After a debate a motion that the management committee be asked to reconsider the ruling forbidding interprovincial teams indulging in more than two days' combined training prior to a representative match, was lost by 40 votes to 32. A motion that the manager of a New Zealand representative team touring overseas shall be elected by a ballot of affiliated unions was lost on the voices. , In the classification of unions, Auckland. Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa, Horowhenua, Wanganui, Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago, and (Southland were all classed as A unions. All other unions are B unions.
