Ballard, stated that allegations of ill treatment of a re(captur.od escape© from the. [Borstal n Tpjstitqte at Invercargill seemed to have been exaggerated, judging from reports he had received. A Departmental Inquiry was befog held by Mr, G. Oimickshanik, at Invercargill. . V ‘ ‘The superintendent of the institution at Inverdirgill is a man who •lias the complete respect and ,con(l'idenco of the inmates and has 1 the interests of the lads thoroughly at heart,” Mr. Dalllird added. “I can say definitely that such treatment as that alleged is entirely foreign to the , present policy of the administrar tion.”
There is considerable feeling in Invercargill since it was reported that, an ©soaped Borstal inmate named Flanagan bad been roughly treated by ihei warders and bad cried for mercv.
(The matter was mentioned by the Mayor at a Council meeting. He isflailifxl that be bad received ( two letters alleging ill-treatment of the prisoner. The letters, together verbal complaints, alleged that things were not just as thev should ho and ,'that ijh necessary the informants would he prepared to come before a tribunal to give evidence.)
