NOT WANTED.

The cables toll us that a deported criminal bound from Sydney, on board .the Ulihjaroa was prevented, from landing by the Australian Customs authorities. These declare tlmt be “received a sentence” of seven years for arson—they do not say he served it—but so far it appears they have not made up their minds whether lie shall be sent back to New Zealand or carried on to Germany, of 1 which country he is a subject. It would be interesting to know whether this man was “deported” or removed himself at his own cost, and also whether he served his sentence. Until those questions are answered satisfactorily it remains an npen question whether this country: has not acted in an unfriendly manner to Australia. That country, has quite enough criminals of its owh—far more op a population basis, than ha«i New Zealand—and although, some of them occasionally reach here it has not been alleged that Australia has deported them. It is to be hoped that the inquiry which must' follow will show that this country has uot been endeavouring to get rid o. its dangerous characters by dumping them into Australia. Among the questions to be asked in this case is whether the man Australia Trill not receive served bis sentence or wont from gaol to the ship.
