HEALTHY NEWSBOYS
The average newsboy may not bo immaculate, uut he is above the average in health, judging by the outcome of a recent investigation, said to he the lirst of its kind, made in New York City by the New York Tuberculosis and’Health Association. This investigation was intended to discover how much boys are injured by the extra work otic of school hours, the weights they carry, and their nervous strain, and it undue physical handicaps were incurred, legislative or other means were to be found to protect the newsboys. Exposure to all kinds of weather has not had the bad effects which might be expected. The life out of doors appears to have made up tor the disadvantages of long hours of work. The proportion of under-nourished boys was smaller than in the total group of schoolchildren. Among growing boys in the preadolescent peiuod a larger percentage, of malnuurition than 0.2 per cent, was expected. Of the 1078 hoys examined, 10 per cent, were un-der-nourished, and only two were found- to he markedly below par.
