THE POST OFFICE
ALLEGED CONGESTION. Inquiries made at the Post Office in reference to the letter to, the Editor in Wednesday evening's "Post" relating to congestion be : tween 7 and 8 p.m., it was found jthat the position is that the office is | open from 7 to 8 p.m. for the receipt of telegrams, delivery of corI respondcnce addressed to care Post i Office and the sale of stamps only. I Parcels for box-holders are not supposed to be delivered, but for the j convenience of the box-holders are I delivered as far as practicable. At iXmas periods the amount of correspondence is quadrupled, and even with extra staff brought on this abI normal accumulation could not be 'more expeditiously disposed of. jQwjing to the Tangarakau epidemic, assistance had to be sent to that office, thus weakening the local staff. The finding of correspondence from south in the box the following morning was due to the letters from a southern office being erroneously placed in a bag of newspapers. The notice "Letters Sorted" was exhibited, and subsequently when dealing with sec-ond-class mail matter the letters were found.. The fault, however, was not a local mater, and is being investigated,.: '... ..",:"'.;".
