CHRISTMAS EVE

THE DAY IN STRATFORD. -Although a drizzling rain was falling this morning, that fact did not deter the very large crowd which was in evidence in Broadway during the day. At a comparatively early hour people commenced to come into town and by 11'o'clock the sidewalks were full. The younger generation • was much in evidence, armed with instruments from which were, emitted sounds as varied as their appearance. Contraptions that groaned when someone twisted a handle, others that screeched when blown through and others again 'tttut emitted sounds which were supposed to be musical and were not all there, while over all these could be discerned the wail of the übiquitous squeaker. The shops, in the majority of cases did a good trade, and all seemed to be satisfied with the Christmas business generally. One leading business man in discussing this matter said that a feature of the year's business was its steadiness. While last year business came in spasmodic rushes, this year it was well sustained throughout. Flags and coloured lights were extended over the main street at intervals, and some of the premises were decorated with greenery. Nothing elaborate was done in the way of decorations, but what was carried out was sufficient to give an air of festivity to the town. , AT THE PICTURES. jM Mr Luke B. Wilson, manager ofiH the King's Theatre made special arrangements for the entertainment children during the day. . Free mat«r inees were given, and lollies were distrbuted by Father Christmas to the large number of youngsters who assembled, at one time during the morning there were 900 children in the theatre.
