A reminder is given of the official opening of the Stratford Football Club's new gymnasium at 7*30 o'clock this evening, by the Mayor (Mr J. W. McMillan). : Extensive experiments in regard to 'grassing ''are being 'carried" r out in , the Whangamomona County at presently Mr Bruce Levy, of the" Agricultural Department, and an assistant Plots have been taken up in Tarious farms and on these different kinds of grasses have been planted, the idea being to ascertain wihich varieties are most suitable for particular conditions and localities. Altogether, there are about 100 plots, Which extend from Te WeTa to Tahora. That it pays to advertise was affirmed by the Rev. Evan R. Harris, o{ St. James's Presbyterian Church, Auckland, in the course of an address recently on "Sky Signs." "Every woman who enters a store to shop," he said, "knows exactly what article she requires, knows, too, what particular brand she favors, but in nine cases out of ten she buys a particular brand because it is judiciously advertised. Many houses openly acknowledge that they might as well go out of business in a week if they cea's& to advertise."

.'■.'A number of counterfeit halfcrowns are reported to be in circulation in Auckland at the present time. One, which was received in a city office the other day, snapped in two when an attempt was made to ,bend it. Another one, which was tested in a gas flame a few days ago, melted at once. The coins are said to be fairly good imitations. The die has been skilfully made, but the spurious coins lack the clear-cut definition of the genuine ones. It seems that the counterfeits in circulation cannot as yet be very numerous, as they have not so far attracted the attention of the banks in the city. , The old manual Are engine, which for some years saw service in Stratford, but which for a considerable time has been relegated to the lumber heap, has again been put into commission. Its activities on this £ occasion, however, instead of being I in the direction of water pumping, Will be devoted to beer carrying, the machine having been purchased by Mr W. Pellett, of the whangamomona Hotel, who proposes to use it to convey "the necessary" from the station to his hostelry. The arrival of the apparatus at Whanga a few days ago was duly celebrated, when the new owner and several friends drove it from the station in triumph. On their heads they wore benzine tins in place of firemen's helmets, and the journey through the township resembled a carnival of the village fire brigade. The only thing needed to complete the picture was a fire.

Messrs Newton King Ltd have now on view at their main office samplas of swedes and mangels grown by J. 03. Hine, Esq.; of Toko out of the winning crop in the Toko Root Competition. Estimated weight of turnips 'to acr© 52 tons, and &f, mangel a 9'J tons to the acre. The seeds and manure were purchased from Newton King Ltd, Stratford.
