Slips caused a blockage of traffic'on the Pulii Pnhi Road. Telephone communication with Christchurch was interrupted at Kekerangu, which is halfway between Kaikoura and Blenheim.

The tremors have been experienced all day, forty-seven being recorded up till a very late hour to-night, and residents are camping out in the open. At Woodbank station the family of the owner are bivouaced in the drive -persistent Demons having forced them to the conclusion that it is a safer spot than the house. RESIDENTS ALARMED AT NIGHT. Round about Kaikoura and in the vicinity of the Clarence River bridge, the residents bad an uneasy night on Thursday, during a series of earthquake shocks which were mor e severe there- than in the-Blenheim district. It is the opinion of residents that the disturbance was centred in the ocean off the coast.

A mile -south of the Clarence a crack opened along the coast road and the land on the seaward -side of the crack appears to have subsided. The telephones around Clarence bridge are out of order.

The earthquake was also felt- by several Stratford residents who state ther© was a. shock about 10.35 p.m. This was not at ail severe, and no damage wais done.
