ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SHOW

THU FIRST IN NEW ZEALAND. The initial Royal Agricultural Show in New Zealand, which takes place at Palmerston North on November 4, 5 and 6, will mark another period in the history of the Dominion. Royal Shows, which, were very small affairs when they were established in England in 1830, have now grown to be of the greatest importance, and have proved of incalculable benefit to the agricultural interests of the world find have done an immense amount of good in promoting the better breeding of stock of all sorts. The result of their introduction to New Zealand should go along way towards the promotion of better stock and farming generally. The coming show will be held under the auspices of the Royal Agricultural .Society of New Zealand, in conjunction with the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s Metropolitan Show, and it is now an assured success so far as entries ai e concerned. The stock contests should evoke the keenest interest, as it is evident that the very betft horses, sheep and cattle from both Islands will be brought into competition. This should induce a very large attendance of breeders from all parts of the Dominion, as they will be given an opportunity during the sales held in connection with the exhibition to secure stock of the very highest quality in order to improve their flocks and herds by a change of blood, which is so necessary occasionally. It is already known that there will be a considerable number of visitors from Australia, while several Argentine breeders have announced their intention of coming in order to procure a change of blood in their stock, and there will also be visitors from Canada and America. Those interested in motor cars will have an opportunity of seeing the very latest improvements in both cars and accessories in the huge pavilion in which the N.Z. Motor Traders’ Association will hold its exhibition.

Dog fanciers are well catered for by the Manawatu Kennel Club’s Show which draws large entries from all parts of the Dominion. The fact of the Show being held on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the week will give visitors from a distance an opportunity of returning home by thq week-end. The ring competitions have drawn very big entries, and should provide plenty of amusement for patrons, as in the leading events some of the best horses and lady and gentlemen riders in the Dominion will take part. The executive, whilst retaining the entry fee for adults at 2s per head has reduced the price for boys and girls under fifteen, as well as for a,ll children attending schools to 6d per head, while children under seven will be admitted free.

The Show will be under the patronage of His Excellency the Gover-nor-General, Lor c j Jellicoe, who will take the opportunity of the gathering to say farewell to the people of Palmerston Nortjj previous to his departure for England.
