STRATFORD MEN'S SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. WIN FOR J. S, LYONS. (By Niblick). Splendid gplf marked the play-off this week-end between Messrs E. S. Rutherfurd and J. S. Lyons. The morning round of 18 holes was indecisive, ending) "all scaiare." Rutherfurd's brilliant drives, were matched by Lyon's approaches arid putting. In the afternoon, good golf again prevailed, and a decision was not reached until ""the 35th, hole, which was won by Lyons, making him 2up with 1 to play. Quito a gallery followed! the players, neither of whom suffered from "nervousness." The records for the second round wore: —« Lyons-^>ut: 545353454—38. in: 34545345—33 ©iftht holes). Rutherfurd—out: 464364545—41. in : 43436456—35. (eight holes). Rutherfurd won the first hole 4—5, after laying a perfect stymie onto hift opponent, who missed an eighteen inch putt to halve. The second hole went to Lyons, Rutherfurd found the bunker, which cost him 2 to recover.

At the straight, both players got away very long dfrives, but each bad-, ly misjudged the approach. Lyons over-ran with his third and lost the hole, 5—4. The dip was haired in bogey 3, Lyons sinking an eleven-foot putt, whilst Rutherfurd's second stopped an inch off the hole. Rutherfurd was unfortunate at the sth, for hi.s low, long, travelling drive hit the wire, and the consequent loss of distance cost him the game, for he dyifl'ed his second, whilst his opponent went out in bogey. Lyons played a nice mashie shot just short of the green at the crossing and was out in 3. Rutherfurd's shot struck, the bunker and) ricochetted into a bad lie, -which cost him a stroke and the hole. Both players obtained long drives at the 7th, although Lyons was oft the fairway. ■' His approach was a beauty,, but he spoilt it by over-run-ning his first putt, by three yardfcs. He holed out his secoud to complete the hole in 4 to 5, strokes of his opponent. •In mutual sympathy each player at the Bth duffed his drive, but Rutherfurd made a better recovery. Lyons just failed in a ten-foot putt to halve the hole in 4, Steady golf markedl Lyons' play at the 9th, where he played a wood, to Rutherfurd's iron. The former was nicely on the green with .his second, but Rutherfurd had to play from a bad lie and was short. It took Lyons, however, 2 putts to get out ano'i Rutherfurd almost halved with one of his brilliantly-played long putts. Playing irons at the 10th, each' shot was just short and to the right of the green. Rutherfurd lost control of the short approach, whilst Lyons lay alongside the pin and won the hole, 3—4. At this stage Lyons was 3 up, but Rutherfurd made a great effort to reduce the lead. He battled gameij with sensational success. By steady play and one putt per green, ho won the 11th, 12th and 13th in 3, 4 and 3 respectively. With 5 holes to go, the game was all square. Bad, approaching cost Rutheirfurd the 14th, but he recovered at the 15th, where, by three perfect strokes he out-played liis opponent. Interest was now very keen for with three boles to go, the game was once more "all square" and "anybodlyi's."

Rutherfurd sent a. long lengjthy and straight drive from the 16th toe, whilst Lyons hit a "skier" onto the fairway to No. 17 green. The latter player made a great recovery by sending a, full mashie shot pin high. Rutherfurd endeavoured to save the game by either laying a stymie or halving in 4. The stymio almost came off, but Lyons with great determination, raised applause by sinking bis 10-foot putt'to win the hole/in 4, bis opponent taking 5. Lyon s was now 1 up with 2 to play, so the 17th was the deciding hole. Rutherfurd out-drove Lyons J but both failed to register the green with their seconds. Anxiety caused both to over-run the pins with their thirds. Lyons then had his first putt and lay within a foot of the hole. Rutherfurd's stopped three yards short, and with his second, the ball lipped the hole, and came out again. Lyons madte no mistake with Ids second putt of .one foot, and so won the hole and the 1924 championship. This the the first occasion on which Lyons has gained the championship at golf,, and it ..is interesting to note that he is also the 1924 champion of the Stratford Bowling Club. Congratulations ,on. his "double" honors, attainment t
