Dr Had wen, an anti-vaccinationist, who was prominent during the smallpox epidemic last year, was committed for trial at the Assizes at Gloucester on a charge, of manslaughter, following on an inquest on a child, Nellie Burnham, whom the jury found had died of diphtherial and pneumonia. Hadwen stated that he treated the child for a cold. Thejre war, no clinical symptom of diphtheria and he. did not take a swab from the throat. Ho considered the whole modern germ theory was bosh.
