The toasts of tho King, The Pi’ess, and Tho Supporters were duly Honoured.

Taylor (the ex-captain of tho team) said they had gathered to express appreciation to their supjxirters, whose enthusiasm had never waned, and to Mr Ward, their coach, to whom they owned their high position as runners-up in the third grade Taranaki championship. Tho team had won 16 out of 17 games played, including a meritorious win over Hawera High School, Only one game was lost—the final of tho competition against Stratford. Mr A. Cooper, the present captain then handed to Mr and Mrs Ward a beautiful silver-mounted oak salad bowl suitably inscribed. Mfi Waird, on rising a reply, was received very enthusiastically wdth a round of reel footballers cheers. He said the action of the boys had taken him completely by surprise. He would, however, like to thank them very much indeed for their kind remarks, and for their handsome gift, which will always occupy a prominent position on his sideboard. A crowd of between three and four thousand this afternoon witnessed the defeat.of the Chines©.university footballers by the Southland team, tlie score being five goals' to one. The game, while not marked by any great display of good “soccer,” afforded an interesting exhibition of a game not seen much in Invercargill and the spectators’ interest was maintained throughout. The footwork of the visitors was good, but Southland had the advantage of height and seemed to make more op the opportunities-offered. The game was marked by a pleasing spirit of sportsmanship and good-fellowship throughout.
