WOOL CONFERENCE

SALTAIRE MILLS INSPECTED. PROPOSED IMPROVED PACKS, (Received 12.5 p.m.) London, September 10. Delegates to the wool conference at Bradford spent the morning inspecting the Saltairo mills. A considerable time was spent' in the burling department diseasing methods of eliminating blemishes, which the tradh contends should, and coold, ), e practically be avoided by the growers. Much interest was also shown in the proposed wool-pack with which, the trade hopes to replace ther jute pack. It is pointed out that the jute fibre unavoidably, becomes mixed with the wool and cannot be detected until the finished) cloth ' appears, requiring a large staff of burlers to reapove the blemishes, as the jute is nof. affected^ by wool dye. It is hoped that this" difficulty will be avoided by the use of wool packs. Subsequently the delegates were entertained at luncheon at the Town Hall by the Lord) Mayor. Replying to the toast of “The Guests,” Mr Colebatch, West Australia, referring to Mr Dawson’s speech of last evening, hoped England would be wary about adopting a policy, of throwing obstacles in the way of loans for the development ot the Dominions, thereby retarding the absorption overseas of Britain’s surplus population.

THE MATTER OF BRANDING. TATTOO OIL TO BE TESTED, (Received 12.35 p.m.) London, September 10. After luncheon the wool growers’ conference resumed to enable the ventilation of some points which are regarcted as insufficiently discussed. Mr Aykroyd, President, stated that a verbatim report of the oonflerence w'ould be issued to the pastoralists of the Dominions. 1 Mr Tulloch, secretSfyi of the Bradford: Chamber, said that experiments with the new branding had hitherto proved satisfactory in the Highlands and in the Laboratory, 'but a further year’s experiment was being made by one of the members of the Bradford committee, on his own sheep. Mr Michaellian. South Africa, asked about the suitability of the tattoo oil used: in South Africa. Mr Aykroyd replied that this branding bad not been examined, and on bis request. 'Mr Michaellian promised to send a number of fleeces marked with tattoo oil to Brac.lfoi d for chemical treatment. Speaking subsequently, Mr Aykroyd stated that the French societies wore preparing a pack made, from paper. . The conference then terminated.
