CHINAMAN'S CLOSE CALL

FIRE AT FRANKTON. A lire broke out at the rear of a shop occupied by a Chinaman named Wong Wai, •" Commerce Street, Frarikton, at 2.45 on Saturday morning (reports the Waikato Times). On |the arrival of the brigade the premises were found to be enshrouded (in smoke, and on an entry being [forced a Celestial mimed Wong War |was found lying unconscious in a jbnck room. H,& was promptly r.e|moved, and first aid was rendered, [after which he was taken to the Waikato Hospital, where he i s making favourable progress. It is not I definitely known how the fire originated, but it is surmised that the Chinaman had been smoking in his bunk and had dropped off to sleep, his pipe havim>; fallen and the sparks therefrom having set alight to a quantity of inflammable materia!. T'lfe damage to the building and stock was only light, the premises b?ing insured with the London, Liverpool and Globe for £250.
