CAPSIZE OF CANCE
BOY DROWNED IN WAiMATA RIVER. Gisfeornc, May 2. A 10-year-old bay. Arthur Malcon, eldest son of Mr and Mrs P. J. Malcon, of 15 Domett street, was drowned in the W'aimata river, near Score Point, shortly after 0 o'clock this morning. The deceased, in company with another boy, Ronald Owen, eight years of age, a sou of Mr Arthur Owen,; had gone out in a small fiat-bottom-ed ca-noe. Tlk'v had been on the* river some little time, and- were in. comparatively shallow water opposite Score Park, when the small vessel capsized, throwing the two hoys into the river. The younger boy, Owen, was iible to swim, and ho made attempts to rescue his companion, who, although older and much bigger, was unabla to help himself. Owen tried to push the overturned canoe towards Malcon, and called out to him to catch hold of it. Be-t fore anything could be done, however, Malcon sank, and the younger bo v then swam for the shore and called for assistance.
