WEMBLEY WAITRESSES

PAY AT THE EXHIBITION.

"SWEATING" WAGES. 7 Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received 10.55 a.m.) London, May 5. The Daily Herald says a number of Lyons's waitresses at the Empire Exhibition left owing to dissatisfaction with the conditions. The organiser of the Workers' Union states that some received only 15s weekly, from which they had to pay 4s 4d railway fares. On the other hand, Lyons' states that many waitresses make 15s in two days, but do not indicate whether this represents "tips.' Another effort to obtain labor for the Exhibition at wage s which arc a disgrace to the Empire met with no response.

The Labor Exchange was asked for thirty-two women cloakroom attendants to work from eight to in the /norning to eleven at night, with no free meals, the pay being 15s per week. It is not surprising that women emphatically refused such an offer.
