DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETICS.

INQUEST AT HOSPITAL.

Taumarunui, May 5

A middle-aged man named Henry "Wialkey, who was admitted to the public hospital on Saturday for treatment to an injured hand died while under anaesthetic administered to him for a slight operation.

An inquest was held yesterday, when evidence given that deceased was examined by the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Fisher, prior to the anaesthetic being administered by Dr. Howard. A post-mortem was conducted by Dr. Vivian, who gave evidence that, in

hi s opinion, death was clue to acute cardiac failure induced by chloroform.

The inquest was adjourned to allow evidence to be given by Superintent Dr. Fisher, who is indisposed.

EARTHQUAKES ON EAST COAST.

RECORDS AT TAURANOA.

1 Tauranga, May 5. Two slight earthquake shocks were experienced here this morning. Colonel Ward, who has a recording instrument, reports that the first tremor occurred at 4.29, and a. much more definite series of oscillations three minutes later. These showed movements along a line roughly joining Wanganui and Tauranga. The indications were almost as strong as the most forcible of the Taupo series two years ago. and the general direction leads to the suspicion that they had their origin in the same neighbourhood.

COLD SNAP AT WEEK-END.

A very cold snap on Saturday and yesterday, which resulted in a fall 'n the temperature last night to thirtynine degrees, was severely felt after the unusually high readings of the past few months.
