PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION.

LABOR IN A DILEMMA.

The Evening Standard states, that momentous Liberal-Labor cor/versaii"ions are taking place which wili the first attempt at, an understanding between t\, e Parties since the Liberals put Laborites nn office.

The Liberals have 'definitely oflficially adopted propvrtional representation as a- Party, plank, and Mr Mac-Ronald will b'd invited practically ultimatumect, tq, give the Government support to a Proportional Representation Bill,. This places Mr Mac Donald in a dilemma, as lie personally oppofcfj proportional representation, but if fie refuses Government facilities for the Bill, he practically signs tb/o Government's death-war-rant. A crisis of the first importance i.s developing, and this is the first (!ap of the Libera'-Labor race for a, progressive vote of the country.

The Liberals arc greatly disappointed because the measure is one of tlu wiost vital planks of their programme, and they had hoped to secure full Government support to ensure its snoe;.ly passage. To-night's decision revived talk of an intensive Liberal campaign throughout the country.
