alleged theft of cold. Dunedin, August 31. At the Police Court today Samuel James Howijohns was changed with the theft of 195 ounces of gold valued at £7BO, the property of Samuel J. Luke and others. The evidence of a large number of witnesses was that the gold was similar in appearance and quality to gold obtained by the Oa; drone dredge from the Clutha River, of which ar. cused was dredge master for a year. Tii/s company went into liquidation some yeas ago when the returns fell off. Ono witness was a gold cJfficer at the Bank of New Zealand, who had assayed the Cardrona gold, and he stated the sample submitted by the police assayed closer to the Cardrona assay than any on the bank records. The evidence further showed that accused admitted selling gold, and he stated that he had it Th his possession for eight years, but he would not say where he obtained it. The defence was reserved, and accused, was committed for trial, bail in £SOO being allowed.
