Tangarakau Gorge

VOTE OF £soo{? FOR METALLlNG-kohueatahi-tahora ROAD. A mattei” of great importance not only to the settlers, of the hackblock districts, but also to the general public, as the work is one of Dominion interest is the announcement that the sum of £SOOO has been made available on the Supplementary Estimates for the metalling of the Tangarakau Gorge Road. This necessary work was not provided foi in the Main Estimates and Mr R. Masters, as member for the district, made representations to the Minister for Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) on the subject, with a view to securing a grant for opening up the road. The result was the substantial and satisfactory vote of £SOOO by Cabinet for the purpose of formation, preparatory to metalling this road, which is destined to become a national highway, and be the means of advertising one of the Dominion’s most beautiful scenic resorts. It is pleasing to learn that the engineering, and surveying work is now in progress. In addition to the foregoing, another matter of interest to portion of the Whangamomona County settlers is the substantial amount placed on the Estimates for the metalling of the road between Kohuratahi and Tahora. This is the result, it may be assumed, of the strong representations made by the settlers to the Minister on his recent visit to the district, where he had personal experience of the difficulties to be faced. However, it depends largely on the efforts of the Whangamomona County Council to raise its quota of the money what amount of work will be done in this direction.

On the whole, these districts have cause for congratulation at the treatment accorded them hy the Government in the matter or roads and bridges votes, and it is pleasing to note that there is a general feeling of satisfaction with the Member for r.je District in his successful endeavors to secure assistance from the Government.
