ALLEGED FOr'cERY.

To four charges, involving false pretences, forgery, uttering, and theft,. Arthur Reginald Borland pleaded ‘‘not guilty” in the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court yesterday, and was committed by Mr A. M. Mowlem. S.M., for trial at the November sessions of the Supreme Court.

A further charge wa g made against JBorlajnd of obtaining goods, consisting of two sets of harness and two pairs of leggings, and money, by issuing two valueless cheques for . £35 and £2 10s respectively at Feildipg. On thi R charge he was remanded to appear at Palmerston North on Monday next. Tlie four charges heard against, Borland at New Plymouth yesterday were; (1) That at Stratford on August Bhe did obtain from W, P. Kirkwood the sum of £5 by means of a false cheque on the Bank of Australasia. ‘ Otaki, purporting to he drawn by Jack Orhell; (2) that at Inglewood on August 11, he,made a false cheque for £4 on the Bank of New South Wales, Inglewood, in favor of Walter Orhell, and purporting to ho signed hy J.-W. Winfield, and did cause Kathleen Rogers to | act upon it as though it was genuine; (3) that on August 11 he did steal at Inglewood from the dwelling of J. K. Popple a cheque book valued at 10s 8d; and (4) that.no August 11 at Inglewood he made a false cheque for £7 on the Bank of New South Wales, in favor of H. Orhell, purporting to bo signed by J. W. Winfield, and did issue the same to Oarl Pine, a» if it was a genuine document.

Detailing tho circumstances of the Stratford case. Detective-sergeant J. ; Cooney said that on August 8 accused arrived at Stratford, staying at tho County Hotel and paying for hig tea, bed and breakfast. The same evening he produced a cheque for £5, purporting to be drawn on the Bank Australasia ’ Otaki. This he asked the licensee (Mr W. P. Kirkvood) to cash, but the latter, not knowing accused, suggested lie should first bring along someone who knew him, or ring Mr Massey, the Stratford branch manager of the Bank of Australasia. To the latter suggestion the accused agreed, witness showing him the i telephone box and then leaving him. t Later witness received a telephone ring, purporting to come form Mr Massey, and telling him that 1 the cheque wa s all right. A little later Borland came in. when witness said he would cash the cheque for him, and did so.

W. P. Kirkwood, C. A. Pine, Kathleen Pagers, Job. W. Winfield and Ji K. Kirkwood all gave corroorbation of the detective-sergeant’s story of the whole of’ the cases.

. To an application for bail Detec-tive-sergeant Cooney objected, as accused was at present serving a term of .probation for false pretences. This Borland admitted. Bail was fixed at one personal surety of £IOO, and two other sureties each of £200.’ !
