The Prince- of Wales, who has just entered upon his 30th year, is the first direct heir, for sometime, to the Throne to that age unmarried. King Edward w s married at 21, and King George at 28. Queen Victoria was not quite 21 when she was married. William IV. was 53 when he married, and George IV. was 33„ though there are many people who believe in his secret marriage with Mrs Fitzherbert some years earlier. George 111. married at 23, and his father, who was Prince of Wales, but npt King, at 29.

Mr E. Mason, of Mountain Road South, who underwent an operation on Thursday, is progressing as well as can be expected.

Mr and Mrs E. G. Foster, of Stratford, left by this morning’s train for Christchurch, to attend the funeral of Mrs Foster’s father (the late Mr C. Gamble, of Christchurch.)

A very pleasant little function took place last night at St. Andrew’s choir practice. Mr H. LI. Betts recently resigned the choir leadership, in order to enable, Mr Edmundson to-‘be appointed as organist and choirmaster. Last night ; members of ■the managers attended choir practice. In the absence of Rev. J. W. McKenzie, the Session Clerk (Dr. Steven) on behalf of the Choir and Managers asked Mr Betts to accept a signet ring and a gold sovereign case, in token of their appreciation of his twenty-two years’ connection wi|h the choir, broken only by four, years’ absence in Timaru. Dr. Steven also expressed their pleasure that Mr Betts, though* resigning from leadership was still continuing as a choir member, Mr Betts, who was completely taken by surprise, suitably replied. )
