The friends of the family will regret to learn that Mr D. K. Gooch > is seriously ill. Weather forecast—The indications are for south-easterly winds, moderate to strong. Judgment w r as given by the Chief Justice, Melbourne, in the extraordinary divorce suit brought by a woman who had 22 children, and whose second husband was the brother of deceased first husband. The Chief Justice declared the second marriage void, on the ground that it came within the prohibited degree of afflni* The petitioner, Lilian Ralston asked for the dissolut'on of her marriage with Robert Ralston on the ground of desertion. Of the 22 children only seven are living. Xi Two Cornish miners were discussing the sermon one morning after El service. “Why, Bill,” said one of them, “as far as I can make out from the sermon this morning, there . ain't no such place as hell.” “That seemed to me what the preacher said, anyhow,” Bill replied. “But Bill,” said the other, with consternation in his voice, “If there bain t no such place as hell, what’s to become of we?”

A leading Wanganui drapery house, importing direct from Home, have been advised by cable of a drop of approximately 20 per cent, in the prices for calico sheetings and of about 10 per cent, on other general cotton goods, says the Chronicle. The advice comes from one of the world’s best known manufacturers, and the fall is apparently due to the conditions obtaining in the larger markets. It is contemplated that other manufacturers will also temporarily come" into line and this points to a favourable opportunity for buying. “Which is the finest sports ground in New Zealand? (queries an exchange). The honour is claimed by the little town of Stratford, in Taranaki. Although there i are only about 3000 people in the town, the surrounding, country is fairly thickly populated aiid the district has so far recovered from the. slump as to raise in just about three hours enough money to set up a first-class sports ground and. attractive park. An energetic canvass among the right people brought surprising results, and now the hew sporting arena is nearly ready. 1 In addition to the sports ground, this enterprising town has succeeded in having started the erect'on of a new post office and a big memorial bridge, all within the past 12 months.”

There was a good attendance of people, including many visitors from the country districts, at the * Lavender Fair and Sale of Work held at the Salvation Army Hall last evening. A programme of vocal and instrumental items was contributed by the Elthara Corps, j and was well received. The items were as follow: Selection, Elthara S.A. Band; recitations Mr A. Pennhall (2); vocal quartette “Sweet Hour of Prayer,” Eltbam Band members; pianoforte solo, Miss Chamberlain; solo, “Hymns of the old Church Choir,” Bandsman Middleton. Captain Jenkins (Eltham) acted as chairwoman during the musical proceedings, and expressed pleasure at being present to assist the local corps. The Christchurch “Sun,’' dealing with census figures and humour, says: Over 3000 folks have returned themselves as having no religion; 150 as Spiritualists; 1209 as Free Thinkers; 726 as Agnostics; 191 as Atheists, and 169 as “uncertain.” To the practical joker the census paper is irresistible, asid we find several suspicious-looking entries iu the list.’ There is one Free Trader, a Good Citizen, a believer in “The humanity of Ireland,” two Puritans, one gentleman who “is saved, but not connected,” a “Holy Roller,” and a “Holy Jumper” (this sounds more like fashionable wearing apparel). The Freemasons and the P.P.A. have only two avowed supporters! A new one “on us,” as our American friends would have It, is the “Skyterrian” faith, which claims two supporters. Is it possible they are dog fanciers? And surely the most amazing entry in the long list complied by Mr Malcolm Fraser and his merry men is “Wowser. .. .1.” Smart Bros, for electric light advertising flashing Solar Lamps. For Electric wiring, repairs, etc. ring up No. 30 and at night No 156. Sanderson and Judd for plumbing drain-laying electric work, etc. All kinds of electric fittings stocked. Good work, prompt attention. Telephone 222. ~
