| The monthly meeting of the Counl cil last evening was attended by the ' Mayor and Crs Ward, Rutherfurd, Finnerty, Nelson, Carrycr, Lawson, McDonald and Mclnnes. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. The committee ropoited as fellows : Mr Fookes fcas asked that the lines at present running across Jus property be shifted on to the Brecon Road. We recommend that this work be done when opportunity permits, Mr Fookes to pay the cost. Tlie Chief Electrical Engineer lias asked, in view of a recent accident in Wellington, for a report on the condition of the electrical iustalla tion in the various halls. An amendment to the, latter clause was carried as follows-: That proprietors of halls be notified that permission must ho obtained fvcm the Electrical Engineer before using any temporary lights. Mr B. H. Horner interviewed your <"omraitteo with regard to a proposed Hydro scheme. Mr Homer has offered to supply the Council with a preliminary report on the scheme at a cost not exceeding £2O. The information will bo valuable to the Council in view of the discussion on the question of obtaining extra power and we recommend that Mr Homer's offer be accepted. The Council heard Mr Homer in committee, and the re port as above was adopted. It was resolved to hold a special meeting to consider the reports or» the change of System of distribution on a date to be arranged, WORKS COMMITTEE. The committee reported as follows :—. We have obtained an estimate of the cost of renovating and repairing ho Town Hall piano, and recommend that a sum not exceeding £2~> he expended. Mr E. M. Frank has asked the Council to fill in a gully in Portia Street South near a section lately pi.Trch.asod by him and on which ho intends building. Your committee, in view of the cost of the work reciuired, recommend that the request he nof; acceded to. Mr' 'Sturi'Ock advises that part of the septic tank Should be fenced in. Your committee recommend that consideration of this proposal he deferred until the rest of the work h completed.

The Council has a quantity of old material, which is not likely to be again required, lying in the borough . ?ard, and wc recommend that the Chairman of this committee and the Fooman be authorised to soil same to best advantage. HOUSING COMMITTEE. Mr Ferguson has asked for an extra expenditure of £SO, and we recommend that his request be granted. FOREMAN'S REPORT. Mr Forbes reported inter alia:— The work at the septic tank is a) most'completed, but is at a stand still till the Te Wera metal comes forward for the filter beds. The following roads are in urgent need of attention :—Pembroke Road from Broadway to the present tar sea Sing, Opunake Road, and East Road from Swansea Road to th« boundary. As these three roads are the main outlets from the town, I would advise that they be scarified re-metal led where necessary, and tar scale 1, taking precedence of all others. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr Ferguson roporfced to 31st July inter alia: Hydro Station—The*e units ran satisfactorily during the month; but we experienced severe shortage of water during the last week of the month. i Diesel Station—These units have operated . satisfactorily during the month, in view of the fact that one of them has been running on load for an average of 12 hours eneh day. It will be necessary to reconstruct maines in Central Broadway between Began and Fen ton Streets as the P and T. Department are using lead sheathed cable on their polos, anl our lines on their poles are not ai the required spaaing from this cable. To got the necessary ground clear-

ance as well as clearance from their rnb'e, it will be necessary to place our lines on extensions on top of the. P. and T. Department poles, and material will cost £430. GENERAL. Miss Laverty, librarian, reported that 23 new books bad been added to the library and six new subscribers enrolled, making the total subscribers 197. The Borough Inspector (Mr W. Rov.son) reported having taken six bead of Stock off the streets during July. There had been two convictions for riding cycles without lights, the lines amounting to £2 ss. The

32*2, pipes 66, cakes 6. A deputation from the Oddfellows Lodge (Messrs I*. T. Aitken and C. G-atton) waited on the Council asking for the free use of the Town Hall for an entertainment in aid of a bed-ridden meiubor of tho similar provision for which was madlast year.—lt was agreed to ma!: 1 ' a donation equal to tho cost of the rent of tho Hall. Secretary Aitken for tho Fire Brigade asked the Council for assistant 1 ■ in regard to the fire engine which was in need of repair. Cr Lawso'n sup no "ted the request. Cr Ward mow! that the matter of a battery he lof to the Works Committee with power to act.

ft was resolved to draw tho attention of mo*or car drivers to the dan'ror of crossing the footpaths when leaving the premises, and urging the greatest caution.

Cr McDonald suggested that th" Council request the contractor for the Post Office to remove the fence hack to tho footpath, in view of the loss to traders in the vicinity at the south end.—Left to the Mayor and Crs Ward and McDonald to meet the contractor with power to act. Cr Oarryer drew attention to th" necessity of motor cars dimming the lights in Broadway, and it was decid ed to look into the by-laws on the subject.

The Mayor said that in the cities nil drivers of vehicles and horsem"" signalled when passing traffic, air! he urged that the public be requested to do so in Stratford in the interests of public safety. On the motion of Cr Ward, it was decided to obtain a report from thForeman on the expenditure on tho borough streets. Cr McDonald requested that th. water mains in the vicinity of Julie' Street north be flushed out owing to the very dirty condition of the supply. Cr Nelson drew attention to tho state of a window sill at tho Town Hall, and urged that repairs b ''fleeted at once.
