OBITUARY

A Sydney cablegram announces the death of the Rev. J. A. Newth, formerly of Ne'son and Palmerston. Advice was received at Hokitika of the death in Sydney last night of Mr Samuel G. Ferguson, formerly of Ferguson's, South Westland, from heart failure. Deceased on two occasions was county chairman, and a member of the county council for many years. He had been on a health trip to Australia. His age vas 75 years.—(Press Association.)

Mrs Annie Dallas, at the ripe age of 87 yrars. Mrs Dallas, was one of the oldest identities of Hie city. She and other members of the family arrived here in 1857 and took up their residence at North- i East Valley. The lato Mrs Dallas; Cnee Heenan) married a Mr Flana-1 gan, and in; her widowhood married j Mr Dallas, who died, several years j ago. Mrs Dallas had a family ofj three daughters and four sons. One j son, Mr F.W.-Flanagan, was ValuerGeneral in the service of the New Zealand Government. The deceased; was a daughter of the late Mr Den- i nis Heenan, who at one time was a prominent citizen of Dunedin.

Mr William C. Phillips, a wellknown resident of New Plymouth, Tied last night at the age of 77 pears. The late Mr Phillips came from Gloucestershire, England, settling in New* Plymouth towards the end of the 'seventies. He took up farming and at different times owned properties on the Carrington Road, at Rahotu and at Inaha. Retiring some years ago. Mr Phillips settled in New Plymouth, whore he Terame a well-known fierure on the howling greens and as a supporter of the turf* while he was clos'ly associated with the Masonic order. Tn earlier years Mr Phillips was a member of the New Plymouth band and he was, also a prominent rifle shot. ■■

An old Hawke's Bay colonist, MiGordon H. Saxby, who had resided in the Auckland for the last 14 years, died at las residence. 23 Orakei Road, Remuera, on Sunday at the age of 85 Mr Saxby was Lorn in Kent, England, in 1813, and in early life was , connected with the scientific research department of the Admiralty. In 1852 he emigrated to Australia, and spent several years in pioneering work in Queensland and Tasmania. He later came to New Zealand, and in JS6S he engaged in farming in the Hawke's Bay district, where he managed the St. Lawrence station up to the time of his retirement in 1900. He then removed to Napier, and resided there j for several years prior to going to Auckland.' Mr Saxby leaves a widow, who resides in Rcmuera. and two sons, besides five grandchildren.

The many friends of Mr C. W. i Babbage (stres the Wanganui; Chronicle) wil": regret to learn of his death, which occurred at his late j residence, "R"iokawau ', St. John's! Hill-, on Friday evening, after a brief illness. The 'ate Mr Bait age was born in Some-set, England, in 1841, but his parerts thereafter were in Italy and Switzerland for a time, later emigrating to Adelaide, South Australia.
