TERRIFIC CYCLONE
DAMAGE ON CHINESE COAST. LOSS OF BRITISH SUBMARINE. Press Asso-iation—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Hongkong, August 17. A terrific typhoon caused the sinking of the- British submarine L 9. The crew was saved. The steamer Loonsnng was lost with all bands, Many smaller craft were destroyed with heavy loss of life. The typhoon was tho wildest in history and did an enormous amount of damage along the shore.
ENORMOUS DAMAGE. (Renter.) (Received s.<fO a.m.) Pckin, August 19. A Hongkong message reports that numbers of anchored vessels, including several British, Were driven ashore damaged by the typhoon. It is also feared there have been Considerable casualties afloat. The damage ashore is heavy. Many premises were damaged and unroofed. The telephone, telegraph, and tramway Servicer have been sxispended. The police and soldiers in largo numbers visited tho soafront, but owing to the terrific seas were unable to render assistance. Six Chinese were electrocuted at Lovvloon by falling wires. It kt feared there have been a considerable number of other casualties, but the details are not ascertainable.
