Money far Schools

LOAN OF ONE MILLION, Per Press Association. Oh istchurch, August 17. The Auckland Education Board has written to the Canterbury hoard asking its co-operation in advocating a loan, which is untarslood to be more than £1,000,000 for educational purposes, such as the improvement of schools' accommodation and the erection of teachers' residences, secondary schools, manual and technical schools and training colleges. When the letter was read to the Canterbury board to-day, Mr W. A. Banks said Auckland probably felt the need for more accommodation to a greater extent than Canterbury did. Tn view of the fact that education expenditure had inc eased from £',ooo O'O to £3.010 000 a year tho Government had done its best to moot tho needs of eduction hmrds and it was inadvisable to <ry to rush the Finance Minister at a time when tho Government was trying to reduce taxation, while public works were needed all over the country. The Government had done remarkably well with the money at its disposal for schools, and another £1,000,000 should not be added to a public debt that was increasing bv leans bounds. He moved that tho lette' - bo received.

Mr "B. H. Andrews*, who seconded <he motion, said the board should "ot commit itse'f to supporting a lar-re borrowing; policy without careful consideration. Money iudioio"slv on education was a go'xl investment, but the enomovs incense of expenditure in that direction must be kept in mind. The Government should pm a R top to *he borrowing policy into which critics were pushing it. While the Government was trying to stabilise the finances it sh u!d not be asked to raise another Inr e loan. Mr C. S. Thompson said the members of the board should have time to consider the que-'tion. He moved an amendment that the letter be referred to the appointments committee to report. The amendment was carried.
