Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, SJM., :of Palmerston North, presided at the Ha-y wera Court yesterday, relieving Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., who is engaged in Wanganui. Mr Hewitt arrived in Inglewood last night, and will be engaged at the Assessment Court to-day.

Mr W. A. Rauch, who has been on the staff of the Hawera Post Office for over five years, has been transferred to Napier. On behalf of the staff, the postmaster (Mr P. J. O'Gorman) presented Mr Rauch with a suit case and a pair of brushes as a farewell gift.

Mrs Harriett Adelle -Bassett, mother of Lieutenant C. Bassett, V C. died at her residence, Mount Eden, k Auckland, recently, after a short Illness. She -was a daughter of the late Sergeant Thomas Blwyn Powley, one of the early pioneers. She is survived by her husband, Mr P. C. Bassett, and her three children. Lieutenant Bassett, V.C., Mrs J, p. Smytheman, of Warkworth, and Mrs E. Waller, of Mangitangi.
