HOUND AND HORSE. PROTEST AT TAXATION. Per Pross Association. Christchurch, August 15. A protest against tho taxation of racing was made at to-day's annual meeting of the New Zealand Hunts' Association by the president (Mr D. W. Westenra), who said few clubs had made money by a racing meeting under tho present system of taxation. He sincerely hoped the Government would recognise tho necessity of encouraging hunt clubs, giving them every chance to become financial, and so be able to encourage the breeding of tho bobtail hunter. It was imperative that every encouragement should be given to the breeding of the true hunter. He wished hunt clubs to remember that r. totalisator permit had not'baen g-ant- : ed for the purpose of their becoming racing clubs under the name of hunt clubs. The association's fi-st consideration should be up-to-date kennels and tho brooding of hounds., with plenty of pups reared to allow of

drastic culling. There should be first-class hunt servants paid well for their services, as it was recognised that tho hound and horse went together. Ho hoped the time was not far distant when they would hold annual hound shows alternately in the North and South Islands", which would give masters a chance to pick up fresh blood suitable to mate with bitches in their packs. It was resolved that tho programme of every race meeting held by hunt clubs must bo approved by the district committee, and fchall contain ct least three hunters' races and a hurdle race or steeplechase a day to which raees at least half the total stakes given by the club for th* day shall be allotted. Mr Harold A. Russell (Hawke's Bay) was elected chairman for the ensuing year.
