The title of the address to be given at the Spiritualist Room this evening by Mr A. Thompson is "How our Spirit Homes are made."

In connection with the Methodist Bulb Show being held next month a valuable silver challenge cup, for competition by amateurs, has been donated by Mr Jonas Masters.

The Taranaki Electric Power Board notifies that an additional charge of 10 per cent, will be added to all rates remaining unpaid at the expiration of six months and fourteen days fsom the date of demand.

A meeting of the Stratford Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary was held yesterday afternoon, when Mrs C. H. Lawn presided over a small but enthusiastic meeting. It was decided to place receiving boxes at Mr A. Moon's shop, Broadway, and at Mr J. W. Griffin's store, S( uth Broadway for donations of old linen and calico etc. to be forwarded to the Missionary Medical Department, Solomon Islands. The secretary (Mrs G. McMillan) reported that the membership roll was steadily increasing, but owing to sickness several could not attend. An apology for absence was received from Mrs R. Masters.

, At the Palmerston North Court on Tuesuay a Nauve uamed Hut ivai Thomson, anus Hui Kai Rehu, appeared on remand charged:—(l) That on August 2, 1923, at Painierston Nortn, he did knowingly make a false document, to wit, a cheque on the National Hank of New Zealand, Palmerston North, for £l, purporting to be drawn by Rangi Hekaka of Oeo, Taranaki, aud did act upon it as if genuine, by uttering it to Elizabeth Ann Byrne; (2), that on the same date at Palmers ion North he did utter a cheque for £2 under the same circumstances, to the same person; and (3), that on August 3, 1923, he did again issue a valueless cheque for £2 to Elizabeth Ann Byrne. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence. Winter is on us again. The fine imposed on H. W. Kery of New Plymouth for failing to ap* pear when called as a common juror on Tuesday was remitted by Mr Justice Chapman yesterday. Kerr explained that in view of the hours his work as a baker forced him to keep he had intended to apply for exemption, but had forgotton that the session commenced on Tuesday. The judge accented the explanation and excused Kerr from further attendance.

A somewhat extraordinary case came before Mr Young, S.M., at Hamilton on Monday. On June 18 a middle aged ma n named Arthur Dawsing entered a chemist's shop in Hamilton and purchased an ounce qf poison. At the door of the shop he drank the contents of the bottle and collapsed. The police hurried the man to the hospital, where the, medical authorities dial covered that a portion of his skull was pressing on his brain. They removed one of his ribs, and g-afted a portion of it on to his skull, with the result that the man's depr ssion left him, and he is now quite normal. The doctors stated that had the operation not been performed defendant would always have had a tendency to take his life end to commit other abnormal acts Dawsing pleaded guilty to attempting suicide, and was convicter' and ordered to pay £26 by weekly instalments of £i to the Hospital Board for medical expenses.
