Main Highways
GROUPING THE COUNTIES. Wellington, August 14. The second meeting d the Mam Highways Board was neld to-day. The principal matter :or discussua was the progress of grouping the counties into highways districts. \ Although in the earii-.r stages &t consideration of the miner hy the counties it appeared th.it there wa-= considerable difference of opinion as to th© proposed grouping, further consideration by the coherence has cleared away many of the supposed difficulties. The groups—No. 1 North Auckland. 2 South Auckland, 3 Tauranga, 4 Crisborne, 5 Napier, 7 Taranaki, 's Wauganui, y Wellington West, 10 Wellington East, i2 West Coast, 13 North Canterbury, and 14 Canterbury Central—were all agreed to by. the constituent counties. Local bodies are to bo couumuucated vvith in regard to machinery and plant equipment, and as to local intentions. j. J reununary investigations show there is plant in the hands oi local bodies worth £500,1X10. Investigations are to be niaue as to tno quality, life and value of road surfacing materials to enable the board to advise local authorities.
Various other matters of importance were also considered, and suggestions made. It is considered that in some instances there' will be considerable amendments to the groupings true to internal disagreements.
