Pistons Down The quality of a motor spirit decides the way it explodes. Some spirits detonate—explode instantaneously—hammer the piston with one crushing blow. Detonation causes knocking, vibration, wear and tear. Other spirit explodes progressively. The expansion of gas is prolonged. Power is delivered throughout the entire downward stroke of the piston.
