Anderson and Hawke s (Australia) defeated Shimidzu and Kashio (Japan) 6—l, G—2, o—2 in the Davis Cup doubles. It was patent after the first three games of the first- set that the Japanese would fall victims to the Australians' greater doubles expeiience. The Australians are now confident ot winning the finals to-morrow. In an exhibition match Schlesinger and Molnnes beat Tilden and Haye ; i 3—6, o—3, B—G. Mclnnes was especially brilliant in all shots. Hayfcs is a former American western champion. ANDERSON'S COMFORTABLE WIN. DEFEAT OF SHIMIDZU. (Received 10.30 a.m.) Chicago, August 12. Anderson defeated Shimidzu 6—o, 6-_3, 6—3. HAWKES ALSO WINS. AUSSIE& IN SEMI-FINALS. (Received 12.30 p.m.) Chicago, August 12. Hawkes defeated Fukuda 6 3, 6—4, 6—3. The Australians have thus won four out of five matches with the Japanese, and meet France in the semi-final for the Davis Cup.

At Forest Hills, New Jersey, the Americans won all the engagements from the English women in the first day's play in the women's international tournament. Miss Helen Wills defeated Miss Kathleen McKane 6—2, 7—5. Mrs Mnlloi-y defeated Mrs Clayton 6—l, B—6. In the final of the doubles Mrs Hotchkiss and Miss Goss defeated Miss McKane and Mrs Covell 10—8, 5_7 t 6—4. Of the four remaining matches, the Americans need to win one to possess the trophy.
