MEETING OF GOVERNORS. A meeting ol the Board of Gov ernors of the Stratford Technical High School was held last evening. There were present, Mr H. Trimble (chairman), Mrs Copping, Messrs. J. H. Thomas, D. M. Clarke, J. McAllister, C. M. Birkett, Apologies for absence were received from Dr. Gordon, Messrs S. Macallster, E. S. Rutherfurd, E. Marshall, V. Johnson. Plans and specifications relating to the front gates as prepared by Mr B. H. Horner (architect) were submitted to the Board. The secretary reported that two tenders had been received from local builders. The tender of Mr J. W. Boon was accepted. The secretary having reported Mr Pollard was prepared to lease the paddock adjoining the school on certain terms, it was decided to lease the ground to him. On the subject of the appointment qf commercial master, the secretary reported the steps he had taken. It was agreed to communicate with the Education Board before advertising for the position of Instructor. The secretary mentioned that the chairman (Mr Trimble) had given his services in connection with the planting of shrubs in front of the school and his help was much preciatedWith regard to holidays, the secret tary mentioned that it was proposed these start on the 24th August next for three weeks.

The next meeting of the Board was fixed for Friday 21st September. i Accounts amounting to £137/13/2 were passed for payment. REPORT OF DIRECTOR. The Director (Mr A. H, R. Amess, M.A.) reported inter alia: —State of School.—There has been very little change in the school roll since my last report, but owing to colds and illness the attendance has not been so good as usual. The average attendance for the month was 208 out of a roll number of 231, or 90 per cent. This is the lowest average attendance for the year. Six of the pupils, who came to the School with a Competency certificate sat for the special Proficiency examination and three passed. Six certificates, showing proficiency or speed at short-

I hand, were gained by the commerI cial pupils. Inspection.—At /the iheginning of the month the school was visited by Mr W. S. La Trobe, the superintendent of Technical Education, accompanied by the Inspector of Technical schools. These gentlemen saw the school at work and expressed themselves as very pleased with the progress that had been made, both in the school itself, and in connection with the development of the playing areas. Departmental.—The Department has approved of the payment of £1 for £1 subsidy on the money raised for the school piano. Sports—The school games, football, hockey and basketball have been keenly contested. The Girls' A. hockey team has been so far succeso'nl in the open Taranaki Ladies’ Competition. The girls were the leading team in the Central D ! - vision and in the play-off with Howe r a wore successful. The report was adopted.
