Archdeacon Hawkins, of Auckland is at present seriously ill.

Mr B. T. Wi Owen, engineer of the Hastings borough, has been appointed engineer of the Oamaru borough from twenty-hine applicants, at a salary of £SOO a year.

The death occurred on Wednesday night of Mr John G. Arthur, who for a great number of years has been manager of the New Plymouth gas works. He was 76 years of age, and leaves a family of one son and three daughters.

A young woman named Clarice Fuller, aged 20, died suddenly in'Sa New Plymouth privafe hospital yesterday afternoon. An operation had been performed with the aid of an anaesthetic, and the patient was "coming round" when death occurred. The deceased was living with her widowed mother at Spotswood.
