The fight lasted fifteen rounds. PROCRESS OF THE FICHT. t (Received 12.35 p.m.) Shelby, July 4. Dempsey's weight was 13st Gibs and Gibbons' 12s t 7\ lbs. In round one, Dempsey led, viciously landing'heavy body blows, and drew bipod from Gibbons' mouth with a left hook. Gibbons retreated, and landed twice on Dempsey's jaw, but the champion knocked tho challenger about easily. Round two—Gibbons landed & hard right to tho body, and then opened Dempsey's eye. I Bound three—Gibbons protested against Dompsey mauling him in clinches. Dempsey pounded his body | savagely. Both exchanged head blows.
I In round' :four Gibbons landed a right uppercut. In-fighting followed, Gibbons boxing well and tho champion having trouble in hitting him. In round five Gibbons drove Dempsey back, knocking him to the ropes with two lefts to tho jaw. Dempsey keep clinching, but Gibbons again drove him back. In round six Dempsey knocked Gibbons between the ropes as they came out of a clinch, Gibbons protesting. Dempsey gave him ' severo punishtment at close quarters, which he 'continually sought. In round seven the crowd was angry, as Dempsey held ana hit and then twice hit Gibbons below the belt without the referee protesting. In round eight Gibbons rocked Dempsey with two lefts to .the jaw! Dempsey hit low and the. crowd resented it- Th e (round, ended with an exchange of head blows.. Bound nine was mostly a.series of clinches. Gibbons was distinctly out-boxing tho champion and "standing body punishment well.He also landed several hard blows to the jow. In round ten Gibbons improved in the clinches and also neatly dodged Dempsey's uppercuts and straight hits. In round eleven Dempsey was outmanoeuvred again and struck below tho betfc. Tho crowd was iurious. Gibbons retaliated with two hard blows to the jaw-'and dodged l l Dempsey's counter. ■R-onud twelve was marked by savage ■ .inrftghtinsr, Dempsey roughing it all over the ring and striking low. In round thirteen Gibbons out-guess-ed Dempsey, doping terrific upper- ' cuts. The challenger was boxing 'beautifully and forced Dompsey to j miss repeatedly. The referee rushed out of the stadium immediately and announced the decision.
