Kirkwood, interviewed, frankly admitted that he was disappointed after his defeat. He said: "The Englishman wag too good for me. His long hitting beat me at live holes.'' Down the wind, Mitchell drove 350 yards, outdistancing Kirkwood oy nearly one hundred yards, yet the Australian's score at the end of the first round was seventy-four to seventy-one. So Kirkw'ood's golf i» pis good as ever. Mitchell's- present form, however, puts him ahead of all his rivals.
