The Mayor received a radio message from Chatham Islands that the Customs refused to permit the Ngahere to carry passengers to Lyttelton, though many were urgently required to visit New Zealand, and there were four medical cases. There had been no suitable p'aesenger steamer since June. An appeal was made to compel the Customs to issue permits.

His Honor Mr Justice Springer, said the Court did not want to put unions to any needless, expense. nnJi lie did not consider that it was necesary to take a ballot.
