Baker, American War Secretary, states that General Pershing and General Petain entered St. Mihielj and were welcomed by the Mayor and its remaining citizens with •■ touching enthusiasm. They reported that the town had been, subjected to forced levies of a million francs. A large number of men and boys had been deported to Germany. Prior to flight, the Germans stripped the countryside bare by systematic pillage and destruction, even stealing the entire contents of peasants' cottages, including the bedclothes. ' , ,
