10,333 RETURNED AS UNFIT. DEFENCE MINISTER'S' PROBLEM. Press Association—CopyngJii. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Melbourne, February 27. Of 49,754 members of the Expeditionary Forces returned to the Commonwealth to 31st December last, 10.333 saw no service and failed to pass the standard set by the medical authorities in England and were sent back unfit. The Minister of Defence is perplexed at this result of conflicting opinions as to the medical standard. On the grounds of the cost of sending the men and its detrimental effect on recruiting the conditions cannot be allowed to continue, and the Minister has approved of sending the Director-General of Medical Services, who will be assisted by other experts going to England and France to fully investigate.
