ENGLISH THOROUGHBREDS.

BOOM PRICES REALISED

Mr Andrew Robertson, of Melbourne, after visiting England and America, declared that it was absurd to say that the war had caused a drop in the values of thoroughbred stock.

Some of the yearlings he saw under the hammer brought double pre-war prices. One colt which he had in mind brought 6000 guineas, and another 3000 guineas. Buyers appeared to have gone mad. His visit abroad had been undertaken with the object of purchasing £IO,OOO worth of stock for Melbourne, but he only found an outlet for £IOOO. He did not secure anything for Australia, and at the high prices ruling there did not seem much chance of an Australian buying extensively. No doubt the boom in American racing circles had had a big effect on the prices paid for stock on the London market.

During his visit to America he had noted the phenomenal success during the racing season of English-bred" Horses. Altogether there were 74 tracks in America and 902 racing days. Last season £813,351 in stake money was paid out. Racing in America had spread to many States which a few years ago did not possess a course.

So far this season Mr T. H. Lowry has won £8420 in stake money in New Zealand.
