«V — 1 AT THE YARDS TO-DAY. The Gift Stock Auction movement lias been kept prominently before the public eye for the past month or so, and systematic canvassing of tlu, districts has also acted as an advertising medium, so that, as expected, there was a big attendance of buyers at the saleyards this afternoon. The yards and the immediate vicinity have been he scene of much activity dining the last few days as the canvassers and assitants brought in the various mobs, and there was a hig entry list. His Worship the Mayor 'Mr J. W. McMillan) in addressing the gathering, prior to the commencement of the sale, said that the auctioneers had a very strenuous afternoon in front of them, but quick, bidding would lighten their task. The Stratford Patriotic Committee with which were incorporated country committee,, throughout the district favoured an effort Kiieli as the one they were making, rather than continual small demands, and they were very grateful on behalf of the wounded soldiers, for the support they were receiving. The district had every reason to be proud of the good work done by the Counties through-their executive, The Taranaki War Relief Association. No other association was doing such good work to assist the men in a practical way and the local association doing it with very limited means. Those present had the opportunity nf buying good stock, which he hoped would fetch more than market prices. Every shilling bid was going to reward, in a small way, the men and their dependants who were sacrificing so much. Besides stock, there were also for offer several building sections which ought to prove good speculations. ' In conclusion, Mr McMillan said that all the assemblage had to do was ro smile and hid well and see that no one got a bargain. Everything would be splendid value at any price. He called on Mr Newton King who said that he would start two or three pens, though ho thought his selling days were nearly over. He considered it an honor to be asked to start the sale. The first line—nine maiden fat heifers-—was then offered and realised £lO. The sale went with a rattle during the afternoon, the various 'auctioneers’ representatives being kept bnsv.
