OBITUARY.

Another of New Zealand’s early settlers, Richard Henry Taylor, passed away at his late residence, Standish street, Inglewood, on January 6,1 at the ago of 78 years. Born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, on June 4, 1838, lie married Jane Elizabeth Eli well, in old Handsworth Church, Bir-i mingham, on June 13, 1859. He went to the United States of America as a gunsmith at the time of the Civil War in May, 1863, and returned to' England on November 4, 1864. Two months later, on January 7. 1865, he embarked for New Zealand in the Lancashire Witch, and after a stormy voyage arrived in Auckland on June 4, 1865. From there he was sent to Whangaroa as a military settler. He went through the vicissitudes of the early pioneers, and was engaged ib the flax-milling industry at Waiuku. After spending about nine years in the Auckland province he came to New Plymouth, where lie worked for Mr Arthur John Hoskin, Twelve months later, on hearing of the opening of the Moa block, he went to( Inglewood, when the bush had Just been burnt on the township, and after working on the railway between) Midhirst and Stratford, he took up a section on the Norfolk road, which) he farmed successfully for 27 years.. After selling his farm he went to Okaiawa in January, 1902, and after farming there for about 13 years he returned to Inglewood for a wel}earned rest. Six of his grandsons and three of his nephews are at the front, two of whom have made the supreme sacrifice, and one has , been invalided home.
