FIRE ON A STEAMER.
LITTLE DAMAGE DONE. Per Press Association. Wellington, December 24. ~'-Early yesterday morning, the mate of the steamer ■Karu l wl)ich was berthed at the-Queen’s wharf, was awakened !by -.smoke, jn -hia, cabin. Investi-gation.-disclosed that, one., of the. fire-men’s-cabins,.above the.engine room was a-blaze. The, mate and some- seamen attempted to extinguish the flames -■.wit|i the‘ ; -fire : dfrigadc’ s'' w assistancodiad; to-be obtained before the outbreak could be got.under •' The conwsnts of the cabin were badly damaged, but no other part of the ship was affected. The fire is supposed to have originated through, a light having been burning in the cabin. ...... ... - . The -Kara .arrived from Greymouth on Thursday .and should have sailed, on Saturday for .Tarakohe aud Takaka. The cargo included a quantity of benzine, which, however, .was stowed some distance from the scene of the fire.-- - 1
