WAR RELIEF SOCIETIES.

RESOLUTIONS AT CONFERENCE. Per Press Association Wellington, August 16. The War Relief Societies Conference passed a resolution asking the Government to make financial provision for Returned Soldiers and dependents desirous of establishing themselves in business, the advance to be limited to £250 and provision to be made for a sound investigation of all cases. The following remit was adopted: “That the domicile of the soldier which shall determine the society that is responsible shall be thatstated in his attestation paper or in the official roll.” 'Other resolutions carred were: That the Conference’s attention having been called to cases where advances have been made to returned soldiers and soldiers’ wives on which usurious rates of interest were being charged, the societies’ attention be called to the matter, and they lie requested, wherever possible, to notify such cases to, the advisory board, and take such action as the hoard thinks advisable with a view to checking the abuse. That in cases where men break down or conti’act an infectious disease while undergoing- military training, a careful medical examination should be made, and should their health be found to have been impaired they should be kept on full pay until fit to resume civilian duties. In order to encourage donations to" patriotic funds, that all such donations he exempt from in-come-tax,’ a receipt or voucher signed by the secretary of a patriotic association could he attached to incometax returns showing the amount donated. The following recommendation of

the Advisory Board was adopted ;—; That there should bo no grant by right of service in "money or kind, but that any grant must be in the direction of each society taking each case on its merits. That grants for mufti should be made only in deserving cases.
